GST Registration via Aadhaar Authentication

To improve the smoothness of doing genuine businesses, Aadhar authentication for new registration has been brought into the light.

The GST Council in its 39th meeting held on March 14, 2020 approved operationalization of Aadhaar authentication for new taxpayers; due to covid it was postponed, but now it has been enabled from August 21, 2020.

The applicants who opt for it must submit the Aadhaar number along with the application for registration under GST. A person opting for Aadhaar authentication for New GST registration would get it within seven working days, if no notice is issued and would not need to wait for physical verification.

The application without opting Aadhaar authentication for GST registration, would be sent to the jurisdictional tax authority, who granted registration only after physical verification of the place of business or documentary verification, which may take up to 21 working days or more, if notice is issued.

Steps behind GST registration via Aadhar authentication are as follows:

(1) Where to login?

Log on to www.gst.gov.in and navigate to Services > Registration > New Registration option.

(2) How it works?

  • At the time of applying for GST registration, the applicant is given an option YES or NO to select if he wishes to authenticate Aadhaar. If you clicked on YES, an authentication link will be sent on the registered mobile number and e-mail IDs of the Promoters/ Partners and Authorized Signatories.

  • The user can get the authentication link once again anytime later by visiting the GST portal. Go to My Saved Applications> Aadhaar Authentication Status> RESEND VERIFICATION LINK to obtain the new link.

  • Upon clicking on the link, a declaration will appear on the screen, here you have to enter your Aadhaar number and then click on “validate”.

  • For Successful Authentication, taxpayers need to ensure that they have updated registered mobile numbers and email in Aadhar.

  • OTP for Aadhaar authentication will be sent on the mobile number and e-mail address registered with Aadhaar. Mobile number and email can be verified at https://resident.uidai.gov.in/verify.

  • You have to enter the OTP in the box visible at the validation screen. A confirmation message will be displayed for successful authentication.

(3) Who can avail?

This facility can be availed by all Indian citizens; however, The Aadhaar authentication for GST registration is not required for non-residents, persons other than citizens of India and persons who have already been registered under GST.

In the cases of company/ LLP/ foreign company/ AOP/ Society/ Trust/ Club, Aadhaar authentication of only the primary authorized signatory would be sufficient.

(4) Mandatory to Aadhar Authentication?

As per Section 25(6C) of the CGST Act, the Aadhaar authentication is mandatory for the following class of individuals as per Rule 8 of the CGST Act in order to become eligible for the GST registration:

  • Authorised signatory of all types
